THE SWAN, TRURO (4TH SEPTEMBER)

(Reviewed by John Smith)

At long last Marvin and the Gayes have buggered off to Brighton, leaving a trail of weeping local journos in their wake, ( oh, and the `Gayes` part of their name due to Brighton having more than one, in it`s village, ...and with the band having less balls than a German dictator). Such an over-hyped band has rarely been seen since the last one. The Cornish music scene mourns their departure - "Boo Hoo Hoo!"

Luckily they wisely put a few good bands on the bill to get the crowd`s interest and the first up were cool disco mentalists Glass Shark. Other reviews have called them `recycled`, (ever heard of a word "influences" maaan?), but like all bands, its what you do with what you hear that makes something new. Glass Shark were fun and came out fighting with tracks from their wonderful new cd, " I love my Disco Robot". The likeness to the LCD Soundsystem, is obvious. Not a bad thing in my book and well worth a squint.

Then came the next band to leave the county, Iceni Icemi. I don`t suppose the local media will be falling over itself to wish them well, but then again who gives a toss? The wild, punked up racket merchants causing a disturbance wherever they go and raising the hackles of the dead-eyed fish who swim with the NME pondlife, are more fun than nailing your granny to an elephant on a hot day. What an annoying thing to find a better band than the headliners on the same bill. "Ever get the feeling you`ve been cheated?"...

Having supported Status Quo, (Woooah!), and soon comeback kids, The Bluetones, on a national UK tour, My Elvis Blackout were as good as always and not unexpectedly professional.

Finally, (thank Buddha!), amid the stench of bullshit and the sound of arse licking sychophants, came the last ever gig of Marvin and the Gayes.

Nice.
